What are Expeditions?:
Simply put, an expedition will be projects assigned to the playerbase from ET in select areas that hold a preset goal or accomplishment criteria.
They can vary from simple but rewarding objectives such as creating a mine for players to begin harvesting resources from, to more complex tasks such as restoring old ruins on the unexplored front for scouts or adventurers to use as a staging grounds for exploring the world. Theoretically, they can be conducted anywhere, and will often hold a great deal of meaning or value in seeing them completed in the time frame given to do so. They will require many people coming together in cooperation in order to finish, meaning the more people that work together, the faster, and more productive you become.
How will expeditions function?:
In this thread, we will use the example of an iron mine, but the process will remain the exact same regardless of the setting or objective being offered to the playerbase.
A zone right outside of Balemoor has been found to be ripe with iron, and a mine can be established with enough help from its citizens. An expedition is begun, granting the playerbase 2 OOC weeks to finish all the assigned tasks in order to have the mine successfully established.
In this example, there are 5 tasks that need to be finished, 1. Construction of a mineshaft. 2. The smithing of mining tools, and support structures. 3. The woodworking of support beams, and storage facilities. 4. The removal of possible bojati attacks, and reinforcing the area. 5. Creation of lanterns, and other light sources for the mine.
Sounds simple enough right? But how will players go about this you ask, lets break it down for you.
Every OOC day, every single player [One character per player limitation] can go to an expedition zone, in this case, the iron mine and aid in the progression of one of the ongoing tasks. In this instance, the player would select any of the five areas that they would excel, or like to help in completing. How this help is given is through rp, more detailed info will be in the rules below, but the rp is not required to be complex, just a few lines, and a roll of a d20 to calculate scores, adding any bonuses the character earns from their professions, and masteries. Once they have done this, their assistance for the day is done, and they can go on their way. It should be noted that all the tasks in the expedition require 100% completion for it to be successful, meaning even if you as the player are not proficient at something, sometimes its still better to help out if you can, every point will matter in the grand picture of community cooperation.
Expedition progress Scores, what are they, and how do they work?:
To make things as simple as possible, all calculations for progression of tasks is done off of a D20 system. Every player gets one opportunity per every 24 OOC hours to add to the task they select. This will require as stated above for a player to be in game, at the expedition area in order to conduct the rp requirement which will allow them to roll the d20 for their score. Once the roll is made, it can be calculated with the bonuses the character would have based on factors such as professions, masteries of said professions, and any other bonus they get from the task they are aiding in. Every task will be different. Now, how to add your total points for the day to the tally? Simple, there will be a discord channel on the SoS discord labeled with the expeditions name, within this channel you will post a screenshot of your rp, and the calculation of your scores. How to calculate them will be listed below along with an example.
Calculation of Scores, and how a bonus functions:
Every single task regardless of how many tasks there are in the expedition will always hold a total point count of 100.
Once a task has reached this cap, it will be considered completed, allowing progress on the over all objective to increase.
Since the max score of a base D20 will always be that of 20, the max bonus one person can gain is that of 5 points, meaning the highest score anyone can accomplish on a singular attempt is 25 points.
The bonus that can be applied will always be based off the task, which will state the bonuses permitted. They list as follows.
1. Profession bonus (If your character has the profession listed on the task description, you get this point.)
2. Profession Mastery (If you hold the rank above novice for the listed profession on the task, you get this point.)
3. Safety bonus (This is only given if the current day has been cleared of all threats on the expedition zone.)
4. Cooperation bonus (This is only given if you are in a group of 3 or more people. Having buddies makes money.)
5. Task bonus (This is only given if the task lists it having a bonus for progressing it, aka, a free point when available.)
Lets see an example. (We will use the iron mine Expedition from above.)
Let us say our character "Bob" is a smith with a profession level of Master:
Today, they wish to aid in the selected task of 2. (The smithing of mining tools and support structures.)
This example task as according to the discord holds two bonus opportunities. 1. Profession bonus, and 2. Profession Mastery.
Bob moves to the expedition area and begins conducting their attempt for the day. "The man stepped up to the workspace and began to heat scraps of metal, working the furnace by pumping more air and adding fuel regularly, the heat was brought high enough to begin pouring molten metal into molds for nails. Once the molds were set enough, the nails were quenched and then reheated, so that Bob could hammer their imperfections out and allow the nails to hold similar shape to each other before giving them a final quench. Once done they would be added to the barrel in which the woodworkers would be able to make the support beams for the mine."
The player of bob then proceeds to roll a D20 for his points. /Roll 20, in this instance, he managed to roll an 8. He could then screenshot his rp, and his dice roll then place them in the discord channel adding in his bonus. Since we stated before there was only 2 possible bonuses he takes his 8, adding +1 and another +1 for a total of 10 points for the day, making the total for the task #2 now at 10/100 points.
Hopefully the examples help clear up any confusion that you might have, but as always feel free to ask questions in the discord for clarification or make a ticket for additional help.
Before we wrap things up with the explanations and list the mechanics in full, there is one last thing to cover, task failures.
Can a task be failed, can an expedition fail? What happens?:
-Simply put, yes in both cases. There is only one way a daily attempt of a task can be failed, by rolling a nat 1 on the D20. Should this occur, bonuses cannot be added on, and your daily attempt in trying to help in the expedition task is considered failed, and you will need to try again the following day.
-There are two conditions in which an expedition can be failed. The first is being overwhelmed by Bojati or other form of attacks. This is only done if the expedition has the noted condition of being in a very dangerous area, and it will have plenty of pretext warning should players ignore the possible dangers.
The other, should the tasks not be completed within the time window given for the expedition. This will auto fail the entire operation all together, and all progress, resources, and effort will be lost.
MECHANICS:
- Expeditions allow 1 participation per every 24OOC hours. (This is per player on one character.)
- Every expedition will have a set amount of tasks to be completed. (Every task has a total of 100 points.)
- All tasks hold different bonus opportunities out of the 5 possible choices. They will be listed on the task itself within the discord.
- D20 roll allows for a maximum daily point total of 20. If all bonus possibilities are fulfilled the max possible points is 25 per player.
- Every player is allowed to participate in Expeditions regardless of profession, character alignment, or otherwise. It is up to the character if they wish to aid in the task, or even to cause it delay or harm. (Going against the task is possible, but will require Event ticket creation and communication with ET)
- All Expeditions have a hard set time limit. These can be extended or adjusted dependent on ET need for world building purposes.
- A task can be failed by rolling a natural 1 on the daily D20 roll. This will be considered a failed attempt for the day, and the player will need to try again after the 24 hour cool-down.
- The expedition can be failed if all tasks listed are not at 100% when the time limit is reached. Should this occur, all resources and progress are removed, and it will auto fail. Consequences of this failure are dependent on the area, and nature of the expedition. (Up to ET discretion.)
- Any questions, confusion, concerns, ideas, or insights for the Expedition system are to be forwarded via an ET ticket. Pm'ing staff will result in possible repercussions as according to standard CoC protocols.
